Humboldt Ridge
Chicago, Illinois
Humboldt Ridge received the 2003 Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Award for Architectural Excellence in Community Design.
The project posed a unique challenge in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood: designing residential units on two parcels separated by a public street raised atop an abandoned railroad viaduct. This distinctive site configuration inspired the team to create a design centered around two large landscaped car courts.
The buildings, clad in face brick, consist of three- and six-unit structures that echo the Spanish Revival architecture of the historic neighborhood in their color, scale, and detailing. Each building includes a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, contributing to the area’s housing diversity.
Completed in 2002, this tax-credit-funded development represents the westernmost boundary of Chicago’s ongoing neighborhood revitalization efforts.
