Designed in 1896, the landmark Silversmith Building is one of the few surviving works by the Burnham and Root firm that reflects the influence of the English Arts and Crafts movement. FitzGerald was tapped to adapt the former commercial building into a 143-room boutique hotel, with its lobby and meeting rooms on the second floor above street-level retail. The original interiors had been removed, so new interior spaces were designed in the Arts and Crafts style with warm woods, period reproduction wall coverings, antique light fixtures, and Stickley-inspired furniture and cabinetry.

Controlling noise from the nearby elevated tracks was a particular concern that had to be balanced with the goal of the historic restoration of the façade. Original wood windows were restored or replaced, while new aluminum sashes were installed to provide air space between the windows for excellent sound control. New terra cotta pieces were cast to replace missing or damaged sections, restoring the Wabash Street elevation to its original appearance.
